1 Enoch 27

5 verses • Ge'ez (Ethiopic)

Translator's Introduction

What This Chapter Is About

Enoch asks about the accursed valley. The angel explains it is reserved for those who are cursed forever — where the ungodly will be gathered for judgment. In the last days, the righteous will watch the judgment of sinners from the blessed city.

What Makes This Chapter Remarkable

The accursed valley is Gehenna (the Valley of Hinnom), which by the Second Temple period had become the primary Jewish image for eschatological punishment — the same term Jesus uses repeatedly in the Gospels.

Translation Friction

The righteous observing the punishment of the wicked raises ethical questions about eschatological 'satisfaction' that persist in theological discussion.

Connections

2 Kings 23:10 (Topheth in the Valley of Hinnom); Jeremiah 7:31-32 (Valley of Slaughter); Mark 9:43-48 (Gehenna); Isaiah 66:24 (looking upon the bodies of transgressors).

REF Then Uriel, one of the holy angels who was with me, answered and said: 'This accursed valley is for those who are accursed for ever: here shall all the accursed be gathered together who utter with their lips against the Lord unseemly words and of His glory speak hard things. Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The sin specified — speaking against God — echoes 1 Enoch 1:9 (quoted in Jude 15): 'harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.' Speech against God is the defining sin of the condemned in the Enochic tradition.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The righteous witnessing judgment echoes Isaiah 66:24 and anticipates Revelation 14:10 ('in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb'). The purpose is vindication of God's justice, not sadistic enjoyment.
