Jubilees / Chapter 39

Jubilees 39

12 verses • Ge'ez (Ethiopic)

Translator's Introduction

What This Chapter Is About

Joseph is sold into Potiphar's house. God blesses everything Joseph oversees. Potiphar's wife attempts to seduce Joseph repeatedly, but he resists. She falsely accuses him, and he is thrown into prison.

What Makes This Chapter Remarkable

Joseph's resistance to sexual temptation becomes a model of the anti-intermarriage ethic. His faithfulness contrasts with Reuben's failure in chapter 33.

Translation Friction

The narrative is shorter than Genesis 39. Jubilees is less interested in narrative art than in legal and moral lessons.

Connections

Genesis 39:1-23; Proverbs 5-7 (warnings against the adulterous woman); Jubilees 33 (contrast).
