Chapter Overview
Summary
Psalm 121 (MT) / Psalm 120 (LXX) is the second Song of Ascents — the pilgrim's-confidence-in-divine-protection as he walks-toward-Zion. 'I lift up my eyes to the hills' (v. 1) is one of the Psalter's most-quoted confidence-declarations. The psalm's 'he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep' (v. 4) is a theological-axiom of divine-vigilance that has shaped Christian and Jewish traveler-prayer.
Notable Variants
121:1 'I lift up my eyes to the hills' as pilgrim's confidence opening; 121:4 'neither slumbers nor sleeps' divine-vigilance; the six-fold 'keep / keeper' (shamar / phylassō) refrain (vv. 3, 4, 5, 7, 7, 8) structuring the psalm.
Structural Notes
MT Ps 121 = LXX Ps 120. 8 verses. Second Song of Ascents.
A song of ascents. I lift my eyes to the hills — where does my help come from?
'I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?' tracks MT. LIFT-UP-EYES-TO-HILLS opening. The question-format: are these hills (Zion's-mountains) the source-of-help, or only pointing-beyond-themselves?
My help comes from the LORD, maker of heaven and earth.
'My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth' tracks MT. HELP-FROM-MAKER-OF-HEAVEN-AND-EARTH. The answer: not from the hills themselves but from their Creator. Acts 4:24, 14:15, 17:24 use the same 'who made heaven and earth' title.
He will not let your foot slip — your guardian does not slumber.
'He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber' tracks MT. FOOT-NOT-MOVED. KEEPER-NOT-SLUMBER — the first of the six-fold 'keep' refrain.
Look — he neither slumbers nor sleeps, the guardian of Israel.
'Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep' tracks MT. NEITHER-SLUMBERS-NOR-SLEEPS. Contrast with 1 Kings 18:27 where Elijah mocks Baal ('perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened') — the psalm explicitly-denies any divine-sleep for the God-of-Israel. Jeremiah 31:27–28 and the '24-hour' divine-watchfulness tradition.
The LORD is your guardian; the LORD is your shade at your right hand.
'The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand' tracks MT. SHADE-ON-RIGHT-HAND — protection-imagery. Number 14:9 ('their protection is removed from them') contrasts.
The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
'The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night' tracks MT. SUN-AND-MOON-PROTECTION. Revelation 7:16 ('the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat') and 22:5 extend to the New Jerusalem.
The LORD will guard you from all harm; he will guard your life.
'The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life' tracks MT. DOUBLE 'KEEP' — life-preserving sovereignty.
The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in, from this moment and forever.
'The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore' tracks MT. GOING-OUT-AND-COMING-IN — comprehensive-life formula (Deut 28:6, 2 Kings 19:27). The sixth 'keep' — the psalm's final-word. Life as protected-pilgrimage.
