Psalms 132 — Septuagint (LXX)

18 verses • 1 variants

Chapter Overview

Summary

Psalm 132 (MT) / Psalm 131 (LXX) is the thirteenth Song of Ascents — a Davidic-covenant ceremonial-psalm rehearsing David's oath to find a place for the ark (2 Sam 6–7) and YHWH's answering-oath of eternal-Davidic-dynasty (2 Sam 7:12–16). Verse 11 ('the LORD swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back') is directly cited by Peter at Acts 2:30 in the Pentecost sermon as scriptural-proof for the Davidic-Messiah's-ascension-enthronement.

Notable Variants

132:11 'the LORD swore to David' → Acts 2:30 (Peter's Pentecost argument for Jesus' Davidic-Messianic enthronement); 132:17 'there I will make a horn to sprout for David' → Luke 1:69 'horn of salvation in the house of David'; the two-fold oath-structure (David's oath, YHWH's answering-oath).

ACTS 2:30 CITATION — PENTECOST SERMON. Peter cites this verse at Acts 2:30 as scriptural-proof for Jesus' Davidic-Messianic enthronement: 'being therefore a prophet [David], and knowing that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT ONE OF HIS DESCENDANTS (ek karpou tēs osphyos autou) ON HIS THRONE, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption' (combining this verse with Ps 16:10).

THE PENTECOST ARGUMENT. Peter's Acts 2 argument is a-fortiori: David died and his tomb is present (Acts 2:29); therefore Psalm 16:10's 'you will not abandon my soul to Hades' cannot apply to David but must apply to his-descendant. The divinely-sworn oath of Ps 132:11 guaranteed that one of David's descendants would reign eternally — and Jesus' resurrection-ascension fulfills that oath. The two-text argument (Ps 16:10 + Ps 132:11) is the scriptural-spine of the first Christian sermon.
