Septuagint Psalms / Chapter 26

Psalms 26 — Septuagint (LXX)

12 verses • 1 variants

Chapter Overview

Summary

Psalm 26 (MT) / Psalm 25 (LXX) is a Davidic protestation-of-innocence and prayer for vindication, combined with love for the sanctuary. 'I wash my hands in innocence' (v. 6) is notably the passage Pilate's hand-washing (Matt 27:24) invokes — with bitter irony, since the psalm grounds hand-washing in genuine integrity, which Pilate lacks.

Notable Variants

26:6 'wash my hands in innocence' → Matt 27:24 Pilate's ironic gesture; 26:8 'love the dwelling place of your house' as sanctuary-devotion.

Structural Notes

MT Ps 26 = LXX Ps 25. 12 verses.

1
identical

Of David. Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the LORD without wavering.

'Vindicate me' opening tracks MT.

2
identical

Examine me, O LORD, and test me; refine my inner depths and my heart.

'Examine / test / refine my inner depths' tracks MT. The divine-testing-of-the-inner-being theology anticipates NT examination-of-hearts (1 Cor 4:5).

3
identical

For your faithful love is before my eyes, and I have walked in your truth.

'Walked in your truth' tracks MT.

4
identical

I have not sat with worthless people, and with the deceitful I will not associate.

Not sitting with 'worthless people' tracks MT. The 'worthless' (mataiōn) is the same idol-vocabulary of Ps 24:4 and Rom 1:21.

5
identical

I hate the assembly of evildoers, and with the wicked I will not sit.

'Hate the assembly of evildoers' tracks MT.

6
theological

I wash my hands in innocence and go around your altar, O LORD,

Masoretic (WLC)

אֶרְחַץ בְּנִקָּיוֹן כַּפָּי

I wash my hands in innocence

Septuagint (LXX)

νίψομαι ἐν ἀθῴοις τὰς χεῖράς μου

I will wash my hands among the innocent

HAND-WASHING-IN-INNOCENCE. Matthew 27:24 — Pilate 'took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, I am innocent of this man's blood' (apenipsato tas cheiras apenanti tou ochlou). The gesture directly invokes Psalm 26:6.

The bitter irony: Pilate's gesture borrows the biblical innocence-ritual, but he is not innocent. The psalm ground the washing in actual integrity; Pilate has only the gesture.

The 'going around your altar' — the sanctuary-circumambulation — is distinct Jerusalem-Temple liturgical practice.

7
identical

raising a shout of thanksgiving and telling of all your wondrous deeds.

Thanksgiving-shout tracks MT.

8
identical

O LORD, I love the dwelling place of your house, the place where your glory resides.

'I love the dwelling place of your house' tracks MT. The sanctuary-love anticipates Jesus' temple-cleansing (John 2:17's 'zeal for your house will consume me' quoting Psalm 69:9).

9
identical

Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, or my life with men of blood —

'Do not sweep my soul away with sinners' tracks MT. The not-with-the-wicked petition is the prayer of dissociation-from-violence.

10
identical

in whose hands is wickedness, and whose right hand is full of bribes.

'Right hand full of bribes' tracks MT. Judicial-corruption theology — a theme Amos and Isaiah develop.

11
identical

But as for me, I walk in my integrity. Redeem me and be gracious to me.

'Walk in my integrity' tracks MT.

12
identical

My foot stands on level ground; in the assemblies I will bless the LORD.

'My foot stands on level ground' tracks MT. Firm-footing-imagery as answered-prayer confidence.
