Chapter Overview
Summary
Psalm 54 (MT) / Psalm 53 (LXX) is a short Davidic lament (7 verses MT) prompted — per the superscription — by the Ziphites' betrayal of David's hiding place to Saul (1 Sam 23:19, 26:1). The psalm compresses the lament-pattern (petition, accusation, confidence, vow) into remarkable brevity. The 'save me by your name' opening (v. 1) grounds deliverance in divine-name-theology.
Notable Variants
54:1 'save me by your name' as name-theology rescue; 54:4 'God is my helper' → Heb 13:6 (cf. Ps 118:6) pattern; the Ziphite-betrayal superscription connecting to 1 Sam 23–26.
