Chapter Overview
Summary
Psalm 66 (MT) / Psalm 65 (LXX) is an anonymous communal thanksgiving divided between collective-praise (vv. 1–12) and individual-thanksgiving (vv. 13–20). The psalm opens with the universalist call 'shout for joy to God, all the earth' and reaches its theological-center in v. 10: 'for you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried.' Verse 18 — 'if I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened' — supplies a standard formula for confession-prayer theology.
Notable Variants
66:10 'tested us as silver is tried' as testing-theology; 66:18 'if I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened' as prayer-condition axiom → 1 John 3:21–22 parallel; the shift from first-person-plural (vv. 1–12) to first-person-singular (vv. 13–20).
