Psalms 94 — Septuagint (LXX)

23 verses • 1 variants

Chapter Overview

Summary

Psalm 94 (MT) / Psalm 93 (LXX) is a theodicy-imprecation against the arrogant-wicked, including the denial that God-observes-human-affairs ('they say: The LORD does not see,' v. 7). The psalm's response — 'he who formed the eye, does he not see?' (v. 9) — is one of the Hebrew Bible's sharpest theological arguments from design. Verse 11 'the LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath' is cited at 1 Corinthians 3:20 in Paul's wisdom-critique. The psalm's 'blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD' (v. 12) supplies a foundational text for biblical-discipline theology.

Notable Variants

94:11 'the LORD knows the thoughts of man' → 1 Corinthians 3:20 Pauline wisdom-critique; 94:9 'he who formed the eye, does he not see?' as argument-from-design; 94:12 'blessed is the man whom you discipline' as discipline-theology foundation.

Structural Notes

MT Ps 94 = LXX Ps 93. 23 verses.

1
identical

O God of vengeance, LORD — O God of vengeance, shine forth!

'O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth!' tracks MT. GOD-OF-VENGEANCE (El neqamot / theos ekdikēseōn). Romans 12:19 ('leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written: Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord,' citing Deut 32:35) develops divine-vengeance theology against human-vengeance.

2
identical

Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay the arrogant what they deserve.

'Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve!' tracks MT. JUDGE-OF-THE-EARTH. Genesis 18:25 ('shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?') establishes the formula.

3
identical

How long will the wicked, O LORD — how long will the wicked celebrate?

'O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult?' tracks MT. 'HOW LONG' repeated — Ps 6:3, 13:1, 79:5, 89:46, 90:13. Revelation 6:10 ('how long, O Sovereign Lord') echoes.

4
identical

They pour out arrogant speech; all the evildoers boast.

'They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast' tracks MT.

5
identical

They crush your people, O LORD, and oppress your inheritance.

'They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage' tracks MT.

6
identical

They kill the widow and the immigrant, and they murder the fatherless.

'They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless' tracks MT. THREE VULNERABLE-CLASSES — widow, sojourner, fatherless. The vulnerability-triad that Deut 10:18 ('he executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner') codifies as divine-concern.

7
identical

And they say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob pays no attention."

'And they say: The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive' tracks MT. DENIAL-OF-DIVINE-OBSERVATION. The practical-atheism of the wicked — God-is-blind-to-evil. Psalms 10:11, 73:11 share the critique.

8
identical

Pay attention, you senseless ones among the people! You fools — when will you understand?

'Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise?' tracks MT.

9
identical

He who planted the ear — does he not hear? He who formed the eye — does he not see?

'He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?' tracks MT. ARGUMENT-FROM-DESIGN. The rhetorical-inference: the Maker-of-senses cannot lack-senses. Proverbs 20:12 ('the hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made them both') states the axiom. The argument functions anti-atheistically — if God-creates perception, God-perceives.

10
identical

He who disciplines nations — will he not correct? He who teaches humanity knowledge —

'He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge — the LORD — knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath' tracks MT.

11
theological

The LORD knows the thoughts of humanity — they are a breath.

Masoretic (WLC)

יְהוָה יֹדֵעַ מַחְשְׁבוֹת אָדָם כִּי־הֵמָּה הָבֶל

The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath

Septuagint (LXX)

κύριος γινώσκει τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὅτι εἰσὶν μάταιοι

The Lord knows the thoughts of men, that they are vain

1 CORINTHIANS 3:20 CITATION. Paul cites this verse at 1 Corinthians 3:20 in his critique of worldly-wisdom: 'For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written: He catches the wise in their craftiness, and again: THE LORD KNOWS THE THOUGHTS OF THE WISE, THAT THEY ARE FUTILE (kyrios ginōskei tous dialogismous tōn sophōn, hoti eisin mataioi).' Paul substitutes 'of the WISE' (tōn sophōn) for 'of MEN' (tōn anthrōpōn) — adjusting the citation to his context of wise-philosopher-critique.

MATAIOI (VAIN/FUTILE). The LXX's mataioi (futile, empty, vain) is the same root as Ecclesiastes' hevel — human-thoughts shown-to-be-vanity under divine-knowledge. Romans 1:21 ('they became FUTILE in their thinking,' emataiōthēsan en tois dialogismois autōn) deploys the same vocabulary for human-cognitive-corruption apart from God.

identical

How blessed is the one you discipline, O LORD, the one you teach from your instruction —

'Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law' tracks MT. DISCIPLINE-BEATITUDE. Hebrews 12:6 (citing Prov 3:12: 'the Lord disciplines the one he loves') extends.

13
identical

giving him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked.

'To give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked' tracks MT. REST-FROM-DAYS-OF-TROUBLE — the disciplined-one's refuge.

14
identical

For the LORD will not abandon his people; he will not forsake his inheritance.

'For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage' tracks MT. NOT-FORSAKE theology. Romans 11:1–2 ('has God rejected his people? By no means! … God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew') Paul cites to defend divine-faithfulness to Israel.

15
identical

For justice will return to righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.

'For justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it' tracks MT.

16

Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? Who will take a stand for me against the workers of wickedness?

'Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers?' tracks MT.

17
identical

If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have dwelt in silence.

'If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence' tracks MT. LAND-OF-SILENCE — Sheol-designation, parallel to Ps 115:17 ('dead do not praise the LORD; nor do any who go down into silence').

18
identical

When I said, "My foot is slipping," your faithful love, O LORD, held me up.

'When I thought: My foot slips! your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up' tracks MT.

19
identical

When anxious thoughts multiply within me, your consolations delight my soul.

'When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul' tracks MT. CONSOLATIONS-OF-GOD. The plural 'your consolations' (paraklēseis / tantumones) resonates with paraklētos vocabulary — John 14:16 'another Helper/Comforter/Advocate.'

20
identical

Can a corrupt throne be allied with you — one that creates oppression under cover of law?

'Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute?' tracks MT. INJUSTICE-BY-STATUTE theology — systemic-legal-evil. Isaiah 10:1 ('woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees') parallels.

'They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death' tracks MT.
