Chapter Overview

Summary

Psalm 99 (MT) / Psalm 98 (LXX) is the last of the core-enthronement psalms (93, 95–99) — declaring YHWH's kingship over Zion with three-fold 'holy' refrain ('holy is he,' vv. 3, 5, 9) that anticipates Isaiah 6:3's trisagion and Revelation 4:8's 'holy, holy, holy.' The psalm's historical-remembrance (vv. 6–8: Moses, Aaron, Samuel as intercessors) grounds the divine-holiness in Israel's mediators-of-covenant.

Notable Variants

99:3, 5, 9 three-fold 'holy' refrain → Isa 6:3 / Rev 4:8 trisagion; 99:6 'Moses and Aaron … and Samuel among those who called upon his name' as intercessor-trio; 99:7 'he spoke to them in the pillar of cloud' as theophany-of-covenant-speech.

Structural Notes

MT Ps 99 = LXX Ps 98. 9 verses.

The LORD reigns — let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned on the cherubim — let the earth quake!

'The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!' tracks MT. ENTHRONED-UPON-CHERUBIM — the ark-throne theology (1 Sam 4:4, 2 Sam 6:2, 2 Kgs 19:15, Ps 80:1). Revelation 4:6–8's four-cherubim-throne scene descends directly from this psalm-tradition.

The LORD is great in Zion; he is exalted above all the peoples.

'The LORD is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples' tracks MT.

Let them praise your great and fearsome name — holy is he!

'Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!' tracks MT — FIRST 'HOLY' REFRAIN (repeats at v. 5, 9). QADOSH / HAGIOS ESTIN as the threefold-refrain pattern anticipates Isaiah 6:3's seraphim trisagion ('Holy, holy, holy') and Revelation 4:8.

The strength of the king loves justice. You have established equity; justice and righteousness in Jacob — you have accomplished them.

'The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob' tracks MT.

Exalt the LORD our God! Bow down at his footstool — holy is he!

'Exalt the LORD our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!' tracks MT — SECOND 'HOLY' REFRAIN. FOOTSTOOL (hadom / hypopodion) — the ark or the earth (cf. Isa 66:1: 'heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool').

Moses and Aaron were among his priests, and Samuel was among those who called on his name. They called on the LORD, and he answered them.

'Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called upon his name. They called to the LORD, and he answered them' tracks MT. INTERCESSOR-TRIO — Moses, Aaron, Samuel. Note: Moses-and-Aaron (Exodus-era) + Samuel (Judges-to-Monarchy transition) — covering the pre-Davidic history of Israel's-mediators. Jeremiah 15:1 ('though Moses and Samuel stood before me') pairs the same two as paradigmatic-intercessors.

In the pillar of cloud he spoke to them. They kept his decrees and the statutes he gave them.

'In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them; they kept his testimonies and the statute that he gave them' tracks MT. PILLAR-OF-CLOUD speaking — Exodus 33:9 (Moses in the tent), Numbers 11–12 (Aaron & Miriam), 1 Samuel 3 (Samuel).

O LORD our God, you answered them. You were a forgiving God to them, yet one who held them accountable for their deeds.

'O LORD our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings' tracks MT. FORGIVING-BUT-AVENGING — divine-character paradox.

Exalt the LORD our God and bow down at his holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy!

'Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy!' tracks MT — THIRD 'HOLY' REFRAIN. Three-fold-repetition of 'holy' parallels the trisagion-tradition.
