Translator's Introduction

What This Chapter Is About

Judah marries and has sons. Er and Onan die. Tamar disguises herself and conceives twins by Judah — Perez and Zerah. Jubilees uses this to reinforce laws against prostitution.

What Makes This Chapter Remarkable

Jubilees retells Genesis 38 with a halakhic focus but preserves Judah's iconic admission: 'she is more righteous than I.'

Translation Friction

Judah's Canaanite marriage violates chapter 30's intermarriage prohibition. The tension is left unresolved.

Connections

Genesis 38:1-30; Ruth 4:12; Matthew 1:3; Leviticus 21:9.
