Psalms 104 — Septuagint (LXX)

35 verses • 1 variants

Chapter Overview

Summary

Psalm 104 (MT) / Psalm 103 (LXX) is the Psalter's greatest CREATION-HYMN — a cosmic-survey following the Genesis 1 order (light, heavens, waters, earth, vegetation, animals, human-work, celestial-bodies, sea). Its 35 verses develop one of the Hebrew Bible's most-sophisticated ecological-theologies: creation-as-divine-household where each creature has its appointed-role, sustained moment-by-moment by divine-breath. Verse 4 — 'he makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire' — is cited at Hebrews 1:7. Verses 5–9 reframe Genesis 1's waters-above-and-below within divine-command-over-cosmic-waters theology.

Notable Variants

104:4 'makes his angels winds / ministers a flame of fire' → Hebrews 1:7; 104:6–9 creation's waters-bounded-by-divine-command; 104:24 'how manifold are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you have made them all' as wisdom-creation theology; 104:30 'you send forth your Spirit; they are created' Spirit-creation.

Septuagint (LXX)

ὁ ποιῶν τοὺς ἀγγέλους αὐτοῦ πνεύματα καὶ τοὺς λειτουργοὺς αὐτοῦ πῦρ φλέγον

He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire

HEBREWS 1:7 CITATION. Hebrews 1:7 cites this verse verbatim from the LXX: 'Of the angels he says: HE MAKES HIS ANGELS WINDS, AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE (ho poiōn tous angelous autou pneumata, kai tous leitourgous autou pyros phloga).' The context: Hebrews 1's seven-text catena establishing Christ's superiority to angels. The psalm-verse describes angels as changing-created-beings (winds, flames); Christ, addressed as 'God' and 'Lord' in vv. 5–6, 8–12 of Hebrews 1, exceeds their created-status.

HEBREW-GREEK AMBIGUITY. Both Hebrew malakhim and Greek angeloi can mean either 'messengers' (general) or 'angels' (specifically heavenly-beings). The psalm's original-referent may be the natural-elements (winds and fire) AS divine-messengers, or heavenly-beings MANIFESTING as winds and fire. Hebrews reads unambiguously as 'angels.' The rabbinic tradition (Midrash Rabbah) also reads angels.
