Chapter Overview

Summary

Psalm 103 (MT) / Psalm 102 (LXX) is the Psalter's greatest CHESED-hymn — a Davidic meditation structured by the 'Bless the LORD, O my soul' inclusio (vv. 1, 22). It cites Exodus 34:6 ('the LORD, merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love,' v. 8) and develops the forgive-as-the-east-is-from-the-west chesed theology (v. 12). Henry Francis Lyte's 1834 hymn 'Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven' is a beloved paraphrase.

Notable Variants

103:8 Exodus 34:6 citation as divine-character-revelation; 103:12 'as far as the east is from the west' as forgive-distance theology; 103:13 'as a father has compassion on his children' → fatherhood-of-God theology; 103:20–21 angelic-hosts-blessing-the-LORD.

Structural Notes

MT Ps 103 = LXX Ps 102. 22 verses. Great chesed-hymn.

Of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

'Of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!' tracks MT. The INCLUSIO formula — 'Bless the LORD, O my soul' opens (v. 1) and closes (v. 22). Self-addressing-soul pattern.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget any of His benefits.

'Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits' tracks MT. FORGET-NOT-BENEFITS — the anti-amnesia-of-grace pastoral.

He forgives all your iniquity; He heals all your diseases.

'Who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases' tracks MT. FORGIVES + HEALS — paired divine-actions. Jesus' 'which is easier, to say your sins are forgiven or to say rise and walk?' (Matt 9:5) presupposes this paired-theology.

He redeems your life from the pit; He crowns you with faithful love and compassion.

'Who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy' tracks MT. CROWN-OF-CHESED-AND-MERCY. The 'crown' image for divine-benefaction.

He satisfies your life with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

'Who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's' tracks MT. EAGLE-YOUTH-RENEWAL. Isaiah 40:31 ('they shall mount up with wings like eagles') parallels.

As distant as east is from west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

'As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us' tracks MT. EAST-FROM-WEST FORGIVENESS. The infinite-horizontal-distance (unlike north-south which meets at the poles) — transgressions removed INDEFINITELY. The image is one of the Psalter's most-quoted forgive-vocabulary.

As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.

'As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him' tracks MT. FATHER-COMPASSION-ANALOGY. Luke 15's Prodigal-Son parable (the father who runs-to-embrace) and the Abba-Father of Mark 14:36, Rom 8:15, Gal 4:6 fulfill the fatherhood-of-God theology this verse grounds.

'For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust' tracks MT. DUST-REMEMBRANCE — divine-awareness of human-frailty. Genesis 2:7's 'formed the man of dust' and 3:19's 'to dust you shall return' background.
