Psalms 102 — Septuagint (LXX)

29 verses • 2 variants

Chapter Overview

Summary

Psalm 102 (MT) / Psalm 101 (LXX) is the fifth penitential psalm (Ps 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, 143) — an afflicted-one's prayer framed by temple-restoration hope. Its superscription ('a prayer of one afflicted when he is faint and pours out his complaint before the LORD') is unique in the Psalter. Verses 25–27 are cited at Hebrews 1:10–12 as the Father's address to the Son: 'You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain' — making the psalm a Christological text where the creator-identity and cosmic-permanence of YHWH are attributed to Christ.

Notable Variants

102:25–27 → Hebrews 1:10–12 — the Father's address to the Son establishing Christ as creator and eternal; 102:13 'you will arise and have mercy on Zion' → Romans 11:26's 'all Israel will be saved' hope; the afflicted-one / Zion-restoration interlacing.

'You will arise and have pity on Zion; it is the time to favor her; the appointed time has come' tracks MT. 'APPOINTED TIME' (mo'ed / kairos) — the set-time theology. Paul's Romans 11:25–26 ('a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in, and in this way all Israel will be saved') echoes the ZION-TIME-HAS-COME eschatology.

Let this be written for a generation to come, that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD.

'Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD' tracks MT. 'A PEOPLE YET TO BE CREATED' (am nivra / laos ho ktizomenos) — remarkable forward-looking missional-theology: a future-people-to-be-created (kainos ktisis — 'new creation') anticipates 2 Corinthians 5:17 ('if anyone is in Christ, new creation') and 1 Peter 2:9–10 ('you are a chosen race … once you were not a people, but now you are God's people').

Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

Masoretic (WLC)

לְפָנִים הָאָרֶץ יָסַדְתָּ וּמַעֲשֵׂה יָדֶיךָ שָׁמָיִם

Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands

Septuagint (LXX)

κατ᾽ ἀρχὰς σύ κύριε τὴν γῆν ἐθεμελίωσας καὶ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν σού εἰσιν οἱ οὐρανοί

In the beginning you, O Lord, laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands

HEBREWS 1:10 CITATION — FATHER ADDRESSES THE SON AS CREATOR. Hebrews 1:10 cites this verse as part of the seven-text catena proving Christ's superiority to angels: 'And: YOU, LORD, LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH IN THE BEGINNING, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORK OF YOUR HANDS (Sy kat' archas, kyrie, tēn gēn ethemeliōsas, kai erga tōn cheirōn sou eisin hoi ouranoi).' The psalm — an afflicted-one's prayer — is interpreted by Hebrews as the Father addressing the Son. The Christological claim is audacious: the creator-YHWH of Psalm 102 is Jesus Christ.

The LXX's addition of 'kyrie' (Lord) — absent in MT — makes the address direct-second-person, facilitating the Hebrews-reading. The LXX-reading of the verse is what enables the NT-Christological-application.

They will perish, but you will stand. All of them will wear out like a garment; like clothing you will change them, and they will pass away.

Masoretic (WLC)

They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away

Septuagint (LXX)

They will perish, but you will remain; all of them will grow old like a garment, and you will change them like a cloak, and they will be changed

HEBREWS 1:11–12 CITATION — THE SON'S COSMIC PERMANENCE. Hebrews 1:11–12 continues citing: 'They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment; like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But YOU ARE THE SAME, and your years will have no end.' The cosmic-garment-that-wears-out and the Son-who-remains-the-same — Hebrews 13:8 echoes: 'Jesus Christ is the same YESTERDAY AND TODAY AND FOREVER.'

THE COSMIC-IMPERMANENCE + DIVINE-PERMANENCE contrast is central to Hebrews' argument: angels and creation are changing-things; the Son transcends change. The psalm thus establishes the ontological-gulf between finite-creation and divine-creator, which Hebrews applies to Christ's transcendent-identity.

28
identical

But you are the same, and your years will never end.

'But you are the same, and your years have no end' tracks MT. YOU-ARE-THE-SAME cited at Hebrews 13:8 of Christ.

The children of your servants will dwell secure, and their offspring will be established before you.

'The children of your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before you' tracks MT. OFFSPRING-ESTABLISHED — covenant-continuity hope.
