Chapter Overview

Summary

Psalm 148 (MT = LXX Ps 148, numbering-alignment restored) is the COSMIC-HALLELUJAH — summoning every-level-of-creation to praise YHWH: angels and hosts (vv. 1–2), sun/moon/stars (vv. 3), heavens-above-the-heavens and waters-above-the-heavens (v. 4), sea-monsters and deeps (v. 7), weather (v. 8), mountains and trees (v. 9), beasts and birds (v. 10), humans (vv. 11–12), and finally 'his people Israel' (v. 14). The Patristic-tradition's LAUDATE canticle (sung at Lauds daily in the Western Church) draws directly from this psalm.

Notable Variants

148:1–14 COSMIC HALLEL — every creature summoned to praise; the descent-from-heavens-through-atmosphere-through-earth-to-humanity structure; the LAUDATE canticle of Christian Lauds.
