Chapter Overview

Summary

Psalm 149 (MT = LXX) is a 'new-song' warrior-worship-psalm — combining praise with divine-judgment-of-the-nations. The psalm's closing image — 'the HIGH PRAISES of God in their THROAT and a TWO-EDGED SWORD in their hand' — has been read spiritually throughout Christian history as the believer's double-weapon of worship-and-word. Hebrews 4:12's 'the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword' extends the imagery.

Notable Variants

149:1 'new song' enthronement-formula; 149:6 'high praises in throat / two-edged sword in hand' double-weapon imagery → Hebrews 4:12 / Revelation 1:16; 149:9 'written judgment' execution by the saints — spiritualized Christologically.
