Summary

Psalm 18 (MT) / Psalm 17 (LXX) is the long Davidic thanksgiving parallel to 2 Samuel 22 — a royal song of deliverance with storm-theophany and military-triumph imagery. The closing verse (18:51) — 'great victories to his king … his anointed — to David and his offspring forever' — was read Messianically by early Christians. 18:50 (MT 18:49) is cited at Romans 15:9 as the first of Paul's four-psalm catena for Gentile inclusion.

διὰ τοῦτο ἐξομολογήσομαί σοι ἐν ἔθνεσιν κύριε καὶ τῷ ὀνόματί σου ψαλῶ

Therefore I will confess to you among the Gentiles, O Lord, and to your name I will sing

ROMANS 15:9 CITATION. Paul cites this verse verbatim in its LXX form as the FIRST text in his four-psalm/prophet catena demonstrating the scriptural ground for Gentile inclusion: "as it is written, 'Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.'"

The 'Gentiles' (ethnē) — the same word as 'nations' — supplies Paul's argument that even the Davidic-royal-thanksgiving envisions gentile-praise. The root is 2 Samuel 22:50, which the LXX also preserves.
