Translator's Introduction

What This Chapter Is About

God prescribes the camp arrangement: twelve tribes in four three-tribe divisions, positioned at the four cardinal points around the tent of meeting. Judah leads on the east, Reuben on the south, Ephraim on the west, and Dan on the north. The marching order follows the same sequence.

What Makes This Chapter Remarkable

The camp is a theological statement rendered in geography. The tent of meeting sits at the center, the Levites form an inner ring, and the twelve tribes form the outer ring — God literally dwells in the middle of His people. The phrase minneged saviv ('facing toward, all around') means every tribe looks inward toward the divine presence. The static camp layout converts directly into a moving column: ka'asher yachanu ken yissa'u ('as they camp, so they march').

Translation Friction

Two terms for identifying markers overlap: degel ('banner, standard') designates the tribal flag, while otot ('signs, emblems') marks the household insignia. We retained both rather than collapsing them, since the Hebrew distinguishes the two layers of identity. The directional term yammah ('seaward') for west reflects the Mediterranean orientation of Hebrew spatial language, which we rendered simply as 'west.'

Connections

Judah's position of honor on the east (v. 3) fulfills Jacob's blessing of preeminence in Genesis 49:8-12. The Deuel/Reuel variation for Gad's leader (v. 14 vs. 1:14) reflects a dalet/resh scribal variation common in Hebrew manuscripts. The grand total of 603,550 (v. 32) matches both Numbers 1:46 and Exodus 38:26.

Numbers 2:1

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:

KJV And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. This chapter's instructions are addressed jointly to Moses and Aaron (el Mosheh ve'el Aharon), unlike the census command in chapter 1 which was directed to Moses alone. Aaron's inclusion reflects the priestly dimension of the camp arrangement — the tabernacle's positioning at the center is a priestly concern as well as a military one.
Numbers 2:2

אִ֣ישׁ עַל־דִּגְל֤וֹ בְאֹתֹת֙ לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֔ם יַחֲנ֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִנֶּ֕גֶד סָבִ֥יב לְאֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֖ד יַחֲנֽוּ׃

Each Israelite is to camp under his own tribal banner, identified by the emblem of his ancestral household. They are to camp facing the tent of meeting, at a distance around it.

KJV Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father's house: far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Two terms for identifying markers appear: degel ('banner/standard' — the tribal flag) and otot ('signs/emblems' — the household insignia). The phrase minneged ('opposite, facing toward') means the camps face inward toward the tent of meeting, placing God's dwelling at the visual and spatial center. The specification saviv ('around') creates a concentric layout: tabernacle at center, Levites as inner ring, twelve tribes as outer ring.
Numbers 2:3

וְהַחֹנִים֙ קֵ֣דְמָה מִזְרָ֔חָה דֶּ֛גֶל מַחֲנֵ֥ה יְהוּדָ֖ה לְצִבְאֹתָ֑ם וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה נַחְשׁ֖וֹן בֶּן־עַמִּינָדָֽב׃

Camping on the east, toward the sunrise, will be the banner of the camp of Judah, arranged by divisions. The leader of the Judah tribe is Nahshon son of Amminadab.

KJV And on the east side toward the rising of the sun shall they of the standard of the camp of Judah pitch throughout their armies: and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The east (qedmah mizrachah — literally 'forward, toward the sunrise') is the position of honor, facing the tabernacle entrance which also faced east. Judah's placement here — leading the entire camp — reflects its preeminence. The word nasi ('leader, prince, chief') designates the tribal military commander, the same Nahshon identified in 1:7.
Numbers 2:4

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם אַרְבָּעָ֧ה וְשִׁבְעִ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְשֵׁ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 74,600.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The term tseva'o ('his army/host') refers to Nahshon's military contingent. The count of 74,600 matches the Judah total from 1:27, confirming data consistency between the census chapter and the camp arrangement chapter. Judah's division is the largest single tribal unit.
Numbers 2:5

וְהַחֹנִ֥ים עָלָ֖יו מַטֵּ֣ה יִשָּׂשכָ֑ר וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י יִשָּׂשכָ֔ר נְתַנְאֵ֖ל בֶּן־צוּעָֽר׃

Camping alongside Judah will be the tribe of Issachar. The leader of the Issachar tribe is Nethanel son of Zuar.

KJV And those that do pitch next unto him shall be the tribe of Issachar: and Nethaneel the son of Zuar shall be captain of the children of Issachar.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The phrase hachonim alav ('those camping beside him') indicates Issachar's subordinate position relative to Judah within the eastern division. Each three-tribe grouping has a lead tribe (here Judah) with two flanking tribes. Nethanel ('God has given') son of Zuar is the same leader from 1:8.
Numbers 2:6

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדָ֑יו אַרְבָּעָ֧ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 54,400.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Issachar's 54,400 matches the figure from 1:29. The slightly different Hebrew form pequdav ('his registered ones' — singular possessive) versus pequdeihem ('their registered ones' — plural) in verse 4 reflects minor stylistic variation within the formulaic structure.
Numbers 2:7

מַטֵּ֖ה זְבוּלֻ֑ן וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י זְבוּלֻ֔ן אֱלִיאָ֖ב בֶּן־חֵלֹֽן׃

Then the tribe of Zebulun. The leader of the Zebulun tribe is Eliab son of Helon.

KJV Then the tribe of Zebulun: and Eliab the son of Helon shall be captain of the children of Zebulun.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Zebulun completes the eastern triad. The abbreviated introduction — lacking the 'camping beside him' formula — suggests Zebulun occupies the third and final position in this division. Eliab ('my God is father') son of Helon is the same figure from 1:9. Zebulun and Issachar are traditionally paired as Leah's youngest sons.
Numbers 2:8

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדָ֑יו שִׁבְעָ֧ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 57,400.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Zebulun's 57,400 matches 1:31. The three tribes on the east — Judah, Issachar, Zebulun — are all Leah's sons, reflecting a kinship-based organizational principle underlying the camp arrangement.
Numbers 2:9

כׇּֽל־הַפְּקֻדִ֞ים לְמַחֲנֵ֣ה יְהוּדָ֗ה מְאַ֨ת אֶ֜לֶף וּשְׁמֹנִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף וְשֵֽׁשֶׁת־אֲלָפִ֥ים וְאַרְבַּע־מֵא֖וֹת לְצִבְאֹתָ֑ם רִאשֹׁנָ֖ה יִסָּֽעוּ׃ {ס}

The combined total for the camp of Judah, across all their divisions: 186,400. They will break camp first.

KJV All that were numbered in the camp of Judah were an hundred thousand and fourscore thousand and six thousand and four hundred, throughout their armies. These shall first set forth.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The eastern division total of 186,400 (74,600 + 54,400 + 57,400) is the largest of the four camp groupings, which is why it leads the marching order: ri'shonah yissa'u ('first they shall set out'). The term machaneh Yehudah ('camp of Judah') designates the entire three-tribe eastern division by its leading tribe. The section marker (samekh) separates the four divisions.
Numbers 2:10

דֶּ֣גֶל מַחֲנֵ֧ה רְאוּבֵ֛ן תֵּימָ֖נָה לְצִבְאֹתָ֑ם וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י רְאוּבֵ֔ן אֱלִיצ֖וּר בֶּן־שְׁדֵיאֽוּר׃

On the south side will be the banner of the camp of Reuben, arranged by divisions. The leader of the Reuben tribe is Elizur son of Shedeur.

KJV On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies: and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The south (teimanah, from the root meaning 'right hand' when facing east) receives the second position. Reuben, though Israel's firstborn, does not lead the camp — Judah holds that honor. This arrangement reflects the transfer of preeminence from Reuben to Judah already noted in Genesis 49 and 1 Chronicles 5:1-2.
Numbers 2:11

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדָ֑יו שִׁשָּׁ֧ה וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 46,500.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Reuben's 46,500 matches 1:21. As the lead tribe of the southern division, Reuben commands a mid-sized contingent — notably smaller than Judah's eastern division, reinforcing the secondary status of Reuben despite his firstborn birthright.
Numbers 2:12

וְהַחוֹנִ֥ם עָלָ֖יו מַטֵּ֣ה שִׁמְע֑וֹן וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י שִׁמְע֔וֹן שְׁלֻמִיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־צוּרִֽישַׁדָּֽי׃

Camping alongside Reuben will be the tribe of Simeon. The leader of the Simeon tribe is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

KJV And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simeon: and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Simeon and Reuben were born consecutively to Leah (Genesis 29:32-33), and both were rebuked by Jacob in his deathbed pronouncements (Genesis 49:3-7). Their placement together in the southern camp reflects their shared maternal bond and parallel trajectories within the tribal narrative.
Numbers 2:13

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם תִּשְׁעָ֧ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וּשְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 59,300.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Simeon's 59,300 matches 1:23. Although Simeon's individual count exceeds Reuben's, Reuben holds the lead position in the division as the firstborn son. Simeon's large count here contrasts starkly with its dramatic decline to 22,200 by the second census (Numbers 26:14).
Numbers 2:14

וּמַטֵּ֖ה גָּ֑ד וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י גָ֔ד אֶלְיָסָ֖ף בֶּן־רְעוּאֵֽל׃

Then the tribe of Gad. The leader of the Gad tribe is Eliasaph son of Reuel.

KJV Then the tribe of Gad: and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Gad completes the southern division. The father's name appears here as Re'u'el ('friend of God') rather than De'u'el as in 1:14. The dalet/resh alternation is one of the most common scribal variations in Hebrew manuscripts since the letters are nearly identical in form. Both names are theophoric.
Numbers 2:15

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם חֲמִשָּׁ֤ה וְאַרְבָּעִים֙ אֶ֔לֶף וְשֵׁ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת וַחֲמִשִּֽׁים׃

His forces and their registered count: 45,650.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Gad's 45,650 matches 1:25, including the distinctive fifty-ending that makes it the only non-round-hundred total in the census. Gad, son of Zilpah, is grouped here with Leah's sons Reuben and Simeon — reflecting the status of Zilpah as Leah's servant.
Numbers 2:16

כׇּֽל־הַפְּקֻדִ֞ים לְמַחֲנֵ֣ה רְאוּבֵ֗ן מְאַ֨ת אֶ֜לֶף וְאֶחָ֨ד וַחֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף וְאַרְבַּע־מֵא֥וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים לְצִבְאֹתָ֑ם וּשְׁנִיִּ֖ם יִסָּֽעוּ׃ {ס}

The combined total for the camp of Reuben, across all their divisions: 151,450. They will break camp second.

KJV All that were numbered in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty, throughout their armies. And they shall set forth in the second rank.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The southern division total of 151,450 (46,500 + 59,300 + 45,650) is the second-largest grouping. The marching order — usheniyyim yissa'u ('second they shall set out') — places Reuben's camp behind Judah's. The four-division marching sequence (east, south, Levites with tabernacle, west, north) creates a protected formation with the tabernacle at its core.
Numbers 2:17

וְנָסַ֧ע אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֛ד מַחֲנֵ֥ה הַלְוִיִּ֖ם בְּת֣וֹךְ הַֽמַּחֲנֹ֑ת כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר יַחֲנוּ֙ כֵּ֣ן יִסָּ֔עוּ אִ֥ישׁ עַל־יָד֖וֹ לְדִגְלֵיהֶֽם׃ {ס}

Then the tent of meeting will move out with the Levite camp in the middle of the formation. Just as they camp, so they will march — each man in his assigned position under his banner.

KJV Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp: as they encamp, so shall they set forward, every man in his place by their standards.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The tent of meeting (Ohel Mo'ed) travels at the center of the marching column (betokh hamachanot — 'in the midst of the camps'), between the second and third divisions. The principle ka'asher yachanu ken yissa'u ('as they camp, so they march') means the spatial arrangement during encampment is preserved during travel — the static camp layout converts directly into a moving procession. The phrase ish al yado ('each man at his station,' literally 'each man at his hand') denotes fixed, assigned positions.
Numbers 2:18

דֶּ֣גֶל מַחֲנֵ֥ה אֶפְרַ֛יִם לְצִבְאֹתָ֖ם יָ֑מָּה וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י אֶפְרַ֔יִם אֱלִישָׁמָ֖ע בֶּן־עַמִּיהֽוּד׃

On the west side will be the banner of the camp of Ephraim, arranged by divisions. The leader of the Ephraim tribe is Elishama son of Ammihud.

KJV On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies: and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The west (yammah, literally 'seaward' — toward the Mediterranean) is the third cardinal position. Ephraim leads the western division, which groups the three Rachel-descended tribes: Ephraim, Manasseh (Joseph's sons), and Benjamin (Rachel's son). The kinship principle governing the camp arrangement is clearest in this division.
Numbers 2:19

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם אַרְבָּעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 40,500.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty thousand and five hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Ephraim's 40,500 matches 1:33. As the lead tribe of the western division, Ephraim commands a relatively small contingent — yet its position as division leader over the larger Manasseh reflects Jacob's deliberate elevation of the younger grandson (Genesis 48:19-20).
Numbers 2:20

וְעָלָ֖יו מַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה גַּמְלִיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־פְּדָהצֽוּר׃

Camping alongside Ephraim will be the tribe of Manasseh. The leader of the Manasseh tribe is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

KJV And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh: and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Manasseh, Joseph's firstborn, camps in a subordinate position to younger brother Ephraim. Gamaliel ('God is my reward') son of Pedahzur ('the Rock has redeemed') — both theophoric names — is the same leader from 1:10. The western camp is the only division where all three tribes descend from a single matriarch (Rachel).
Numbers 2:21

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם שְׁנַ֧יִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וּמָאתָֽיִם׃

His forces and their registered count: 32,200.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Manasseh's 32,200 matches 1:35 — the smallest individual tribal count in the entire census. This makes the western division the weakest numerically, yet its central position in the marching order (third of four, behind the tabernacle) means it is protected by the divisions ahead and behind.
Numbers 2:22

וּמַטֵּ֖ה בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֔ן אֲבִידָ֖ן בֶּן־גִּדְעֹנִֽי׃

Then the tribe of Benjamin. The leader of the Benjamin tribe is Abidan son of Gideoni.

KJV Then the tribe of Benjamin: and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Benjamin completes the Rachel-tribe western division. Abidan ('my father is judge') son of Gideoni is the same leader from 1:11. Benjamin's placement with Ephraim and Manasseh rather than next to Judah is significant — the later historical split between the northern kingdom (led by Ephraim) and the southern kingdom (Judah) would draw Benjamin into Judah's orbit despite this earlier kinship grouping.
Numbers 2:23

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם חֲמִשָּׁ֧ה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 35,400.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Benjamin's 35,400 matches 1:37. This tribe, though relatively small, would produce Israel's first king (Saul, 1 Samuel 9:1-2) and later remain loyal to the Davidic dynasty when the northern tribes seceded (1 Kings 12:21).
Numbers 2:24

כׇּֽל־הַפְּקֻדִ֞ים לְמַחֲנֵ֣ה אֶפְרַ֗יִם מְאַ֥ת אֶ֛לֶף וּשְׁמֹֽנַת־אֲלָפִ֥ים וּמֵאָ֖ה לְצִבְאֹתָ֑ם וּשְׁלִשִׁ֖ים יִסָּֽעוּ׃ {ס}

The combined total for the camp of Ephraim, across all their divisions: 108,100. They will break camp third.

KJV All that were numbered of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred, throughout their armies. And they shall go forward in the third rank.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The western division total of 108,100 (40,500 + 32,200 + 35,400) is the smallest of the four divisions. Their position — ushelishim yissa'u ('third they shall set out') — places them immediately behind the Levites and the tabernacle, meaning they march directly after the sacred center. The section marker (samekh) separates this from the final division.
Numbers 2:25

דֶּ֣גֶל מַחֲנֵ֥ה דָ֛ן צָפֹ֖נָה לְצִבְאֹתָ֑ם וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י דָ֔ן אֲחִיעֶ֖זֶר בֶּן־עַמִּֽישַׁדָּֽי׃

On the north side will be the banner of the camp of Dan, arranged by divisions. The leader of the Dan tribe is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

KJV The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north side by their armies: and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The north (tsafonah, from a root meaning 'hidden' or 'treasured') receives the fourth and final position. Dan leads the northern division, which groups the three concubine-born tribes: Dan and Naphtali (sons of Bilhah) and Asher (son of Zilpah). This division serves as the rearguard during the march.
Numbers 2:26

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם שְׁנַ֧יִם וְשִׁשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וּשְׁבַ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 62,700.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Dan's 62,700 matches 1:39 — the second-largest tribal count overall. Dan's substantial numbers make it an effective rearguard leader, responsible for protecting the column from behind during the march through the wilderness.
Numbers 2:27

וְהַחֹנִ֥ים עָלָ֖יו מַטֵּ֣ה אָשֵׁ֑ר וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י אָשֵׁ֔ר פַּגְעִיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־עׇכְרָֽן׃

Camping alongside Dan will be the tribe of Asher. The leader of the Asher tribe is Pagiel son of Ocran.

KJV And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher: and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Asher (son of Zilpah, Leah's servant) is placed with Dan and Naphtali (sons of Bilhah, Rachel's servant) rather than with the other Zilpah-born tribe Gad. This arrangement groups concubine-born tribes together while distributing Zilpah's sons between the southern and northern divisions.
Numbers 2:28

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם אֶחָ֧ד וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 41,500.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Asher's 41,500 matches 1:41. Positioned between the larger Dan (62,700) and Naphtali (53,400), Asher's mid-range count contributes to a well-balanced rearguard division.
Numbers 2:29

וּמַטֵּ֖ה נַפְתָּלִ֑י וְנָשִׂיא֙ לִבְנֵ֣י נַפְתָּלִ֔י אֲחִירַ֖ע בֶּן־עֵינָֽן׃

Then the tribe of Naphtali. The leader of the Naphtali tribe is Ahira son of Enan.

KJV Then the tribe of Naphtali: and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Naphtali closes both the northern division and the complete camp arrangement. Ahira son of Enan is the same leader from 1:15. Naphtali and Dan are full brothers (both sons of Bilhah), making this the only division with two tribes sharing the same mother.
Numbers 2:30

וּצְבָא֖וֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶ֑ם שְׁלֹשָׁ֧ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃

His forces and their registered count: 53,400.

KJV And his host, and those that were numbered of them, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. Naphtali's 53,400 matches 1:43. This completes the fourth and final division's census data. The northern division will march last in the column — la'acharonah ('hindmost,' v. 31) — serving as the rearguard protecting the entire nation.
Numbers 2:31

כׇּל־הַפְּקֻדִים֙ לְמַ֣חֲנֵה דָ֔ן מְאַ֣ת אֶ֗לֶף וְשִׁבְעָ֧ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וְשֵׁ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת לָאַחֲרֹנָ֥ה יִסְע֖וּ לְדִגְלֵיהֶֽם׃ {פ}

The combined total for the camp of Dan, across all their divisions: 157,600. They will break camp last, marching under their banners.

KJV All they that were numbered in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred. They shall go hindmost with their standards.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The northern division total of 157,600 (62,700 + 41,500 + 53,400) is the second-largest, making it an effective rearguard. The phrase la'acharonah yis'u ledigleihem ('last they shall march, by their standards') assigns the critical rearguard position — protecting against attack from behind — to the strongest remaining division. The paragraph marker (pe) signals the transition to the chapter's concluding summary.
Numbers 2:32

These are the Israelites registered by ancestral household. The grand total of all the camps across every division: 603,550.

KJV These are those which were numbered of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers: all those that were numbered of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The grand total of 603,550 matches both the chapter 1 census total (1:46) and the Exodus 38:26 figure. The consistency across three separate tabulations — census, camp arrangement, and tabernacle tax — demonstrates the internal coherence of the Torah's numerical records. The four-division totals (186,400 + 151,450 + 108,100 + 157,600) add precisely to 603,550.
Numbers 2:33

וְהַ֨לְוִיִּ֔ם לֹ֣א הׇתְפָּקְד֔וּ בְּת֖וֹךְ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃

The Levites were not registered among the other Israelites, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

KJV But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses.

Notes & Key Terms

Translator Notes

  1. The Levite exemption is restated (lo hotpaqdu betokh benei Yisra'el — 'they were not mustered among the Israelites'), now with the explanatory clause ka'asher tsivvah YHWH et Mosheh ('as the LORD commanded Moses'). This connects back to the divine instruction in 1:48-49 and emphasizes that the Levites' separate status is not an oversight but an explicit divine directive.
Numbers 2:34

וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כְּ֠כֹ֠ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֨ה יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֗ה כֵּֽן־חָנ֤וּ לְדִגְלֵיהֶם֙ וְכֵ֣ן נָסָ֔עוּ אִ֥ישׁ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖יו עַל־בֵּ֥ית אֲבֹתָֽיו׃ {פ}

The Israelites did everything the LORD had commanded Moses. They camped under their banners in this arrangement, and they marched in this order — each man with his own clan, identified by his ancestral household.

KJV And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses: so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, every one after their families, according to the house of their fathers.

Translator Notes

  1. The closing obedience formula confirms complete compliance with both camping and marching orders: ken chanu ledigleihem vekhen nasa'u ('so they camped by their standards and so they marched'). The final phrase — ish lemishpechotav al beit avotav ('each man by his clan, according to his ancestral house') — grounds the vast military organization in family identity. The paragraph marker (pe) closes the literary unit. The camp arrangement described here — a cruciform pattern with the tabernacle at center, four three-tribe divisions at the cardinal points — would define Israel's spatial identity throughout the wilderness period.
