Ge'ez text per Charles/VanderKam editions
In the seventh year of this week, Isaac called his two sons Esau and Jacob. They came to him, and he said:
REF And in the seventh year Isaac called his two sons Esau and Jacob.
Isaac, now very old, calls Jacob and Esau together. He delivers final blessings and a testament. Isaac warns Esau against harboring hatred for Jacob. He adjures both sons to keep peace. Isaac divides his possessions.
Isaac's deathbed testament follows the literary pattern of the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs. His plea for fraternal peace carries political overtones: Judea and Edom should coexist.
The emphasis on Esau's promise of peace creates dramatic irony — chapters 37-38 will narrate wars between Jacob and Esau.
Genesis 35:27-29 (Isaac's death); Genesis 25:23 (oracle about the twins); Malachi 1:2-3.
